What is brown noise?

Brown noise is a steady noise in which the low tones are the strongest. It gets quieter as the pitch rises, by about six decibels per octave. The ear hears it as dark, soft and deep, comparable to a distant rumble, a strong waterfall or the drone of a plane at night.

The name has nothing to do with the color. It comes from Brownian motion, named after the botanist Robert Brown, whose random path has the same spectrum.

Pink noise

Complete

More balanced and a little brighter; it falls by about three decibels per octave. Reminds many people of steady rain.

Green noise

Complete

Emphasizes the middle tones and sounds natural and soft, without deep rumble and without sharp highs.

Which color you like best is a matter of taste. Try them one after another on a single evening.

How to use brown noise in the evening

Many people use it to fall asleep, to fall back asleep at night, or to soften background sounds while reading or working.

  1. Pick warm brown noise or another noise color.
  2. Keep the volume low: you should only just notice the noise.
  3. Set the sleep timer to 30 or 60 minutes.
  4. Put the phone aside. The sound keeps playing with the screen locked.
  5. If you like, start with a breathing exercise and let the noise play on afterward.

Whether noise helps you fall asleep is individual. Taceora is a relaxation product, not a medical device; if you have lasting sleep problems, talk to a doctor.
